FORTH/ICE-HT at the 82nd Thessaloniki International Fair
The Institute of Chemical Engineering Sciences (ICE-HT) participated in the 82nd Thessaloniki International Fair through the booth of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT). The Fair was held from 9 to 16 September, 2017. Selected research activities of the teams headed by G. Vogiatzis, I. Kallitsis and S. Yannopoulos were presented at the booth, focusing on the results of the European research project SmartPro, namely, Lightweight, Flexible, Intelligent Textiles for Citizen Protection Services.
The project involved the development of flexible and light textile panels and garments that combine anti-ballistic protection with protection from sharp objects (e.g., knife) and would offer concrete advantages over commercially available ones, which are relatively heavy, bulky and rigid. The surface interconnection of the basic panel material with new generation, rigid polymers appears to satisfy the new requirements without compromising protection. In addition, the suits under development have built-in warning systems for toxic gases and built-in GPS to locate the user in case of emergency.
