FORTH/ICE-HT at the 84th Thessaloniki International Fair

The Institute of Chemical Engineering Sciences (ICE-HT) participated in the 84th Thessaloniki International Fair, which took place from 7 to 15 September, 2019, demonstrating one of its new technologies through stand 13 of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT).

Specifically, FORTH/ICE-HT presented a new technology for CO2 capture that was developed at the Institute using advanced materials and its integration with a biotransformation process of carbon dioxide into useful chemicals and fuels. This process is proposed as a solution to the problem of carbon dioxide emissions from PPC SA lignitic plants, as it can use the gas pollutants for the production of high added-value chemicals and biofuels. It could therefore be of substantial importance for the Greek economy, as it can lead to environmental cost reduction thanks to decreased emissions. FORTH/ICE-HT presented this innovative process through a video, which attracted the attention of many visitors of the GSRT stand. The exhibit was visited by the Minister of Development, Mr. Adonis Georgiadis and the General Secretariat for Research and Technology, Mr. Athanasios Kyriazis. This technology is developed in the framework of the project ΒIOMEK (T1EDK-00279), Action “RESEARCH – CREATE – INNOVATE”, NSRF 2014-2020 coordinated by FORTH/ICE-HT, in collaboration with –TRSC-PPC SA. Coordinator of the project is Dr. Vasileios Burganos and scientific supervisor is Dr. Maria I. Klapa. The new technologies for CO2 capture are developed in the research laboratories of Drs Th. Ioannides and V. Dracopoulos.
