Sustainable processes: Exploitation of residual biomass and wastes for biofuels production |
Abstract: | A shift from petroleum refineries to sustainable bio-refineries is becoming increasingly important, due to the fossil fuel depletion and many environmental issues. To achieve the development of bio-refineries for bioenergy generation, environmentally friendly and cost-effective processes, based on renewable resources such as biomass, need to be developed. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a mature biological conversion process in which residual biomass or wastes can be transformed into biogas, which is a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide that can be used as fuel. The process can be oriented towards dark fermentation (DF), where hydrogen might be produced instead of methane, by controlling operational parameters, inhibiting thus the methanogenesis.
In this presentation, fermentative hydrogen production and AD will be discussed. The microbiological and technological background of both processes, the basic principles and the current technologies will be outlined. Emphasis will be given on the exploitation and use of biomass/wastes of different origin as substrates in AD and DF, in lab and pilot scale experiments, while the factors affecting both processes will be analyzed and correlated with their performance and efficiency. |
Short CV: | From 2022, Georgia Antonopoulou is an Associate Professor at the Department of Sustainable Agriculture, School of Agricultural Sciences, of the University of Patras. She has a BSc, an MSc and a PhD in Chemical Engineering (2006). She has worked as a Research Associate at the FORTH/ICE-HT (2007-2022), the School of Chemical Engineering of the NTUA (2016-2022), the Aegean University (2020-2021) and the University of Patras (2006-2011). She has also worked as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Peloponnese (2009-2011), Ionian University (2009-2016) and the University of Patras (2019-2021). She was also Collaborating Teaching Member at the Hellenic Open University (2015-2023). Her research focuses on the design and development of innovative biochemical processes for the treatment and valorization of municipal, agricultural, industrial wastes and residual biomass, through the use of mixed and pure microbial cultures, microbial electrochemical technology and mathematical modeling and optimization of anaerobic and aerobic biological production processes. She has gained 3 Post-Doctoral Fellowships (1st Call for H.F.R.I (2018-2021), ΕΔΒΜ103 (2021) and Supporting Postdoctoral Researchers Projects (2012-2015)), a PhD fellowship (program PENED) and an MSc fellowship (program EPEAEK).
She is co-author of ~65 scientific papers in peer-reviewed international journals, 9 book chapters, 1 monograph (Scopus h index =26, citations: ~2890; google scholar h index =31, citations: ~4100) and >100 articles in proceedings of international and national conferences. She has participated as a researcher and coordinator in >25 international and national R&D projects, she is a reviewer for >40 international scientific journals and a member of proposal evaluation panels, editorial boards, scientific committees and associations. |
