The 10^th International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) International Conference on Foundations of Systems Biology in Engineering (FOSBE2024) was held on September 8-11, 2024, on Corfu Island in Greece. The Conference was organized by IFAC, supported by the Comité Español de Automática (CEA) acting as IFAC National Member Organization, in collaboration with the Institute of Chemical Engineering Sciences (ICE-HT) of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) in Greece. FOSBE2024 was co-sponsored by the European Infrastructure on Biological Data Management & Analysis, ELIXIR, with special support by its Systems Biology Community and the Greek Node (ELIXIR-GR). With more than 90 participants from academia, industry and scientific journals from 18 countries, of whom more than half being graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, FOSBE 2024 was a resounding success, continuing the mission of the FOSBE series to advance the fields of systems and synthetic biology through the integration of systems engineering, mathematical modeling, and process control principles.

This year’s conference comprised five sessions, two keynote (Nikos Kyrpides, Rahuman Sheriff) and nine invited lectures (Ioannis Androulakis, Davide Fiore, Livija Deban, Rennos Fragkoudis, Traci Haddock, Massimo Lai, Tereza Manousaki, Barbara Szomolay, Shihui (Shane) YANG), 19 solicited oral and 46 poster presentations. FOSBE 2024 also focused on the future trajectory of systems and synthetic biology, including two panels: (1) “Systems & Synthetic Biology: Innovation & Entrepreneurship” (Alejandro Vignoni, Kyrpides, Marc Biarnes Carrera, Haddock, Lai, Spyros I. Vernardis) , and (2) “Systems & Synthetic Biology: What about training, funding and publishing?” (John Hancock, Jesús Picó i Marco, Androulakis, Thomas C. Collin, PhD). We underline the support of Frontiers in Systems Biology journal, which organized a special session on “Breaking Down Silos and Integrating Datasets, Toolsets, and Mindsets in Partnership with FOSBE” (presented by Yoram Vodovotz and T. Collin), inaugurating its Young Investigator Award (Ashti Shah). The FOSBE Award for his great contribution to the fields of systems and hsyntheticbiology was presented to Prof. Picó.
