Abstract: | The successful translation of synthetic biology innovations into commercially viable biomanufacturing processes is often hindered by challenges associated with process scale-up. This study presents a systematic methodology that employs artificial intelligence to streamline these efforts. We demonstrate the application of active learning for the design of optimized culture media for 3-hydroxypropionic acid (3-HP) production in Rhodosporidium toruloides at a microplate scale (0.8 mL). Furthermore, we illustrate how these micro-scale data, when combined with a limited dataset from a larger bench-scale (150 mL), can be used to accurately predict 3-HP titers across divergent scales. This work highlights the potential of transfer learning to address key challenges in bioprocess scale-up, thereby improving product titers and yields and contributing to the development of a sustainable and profitable bioeconomy. |
