Research Activities:

Research activities are focused on two main directions:

A. Nanomaterials - Nanoscience - Nanotechnology
  • Developing rational bottom-up synthetic routes (wet chemistry; CVD) for the controlled growth of 1-D nanostructures, ZnO and metal oxide-core/metal chalcogenide-shell nanowires for:
    (i) Energy conversion (optimizing the anode and cathode active materials for dye-sensitized solar cells; improving the anode nanostructures for water splitting and H2 evolution; piezoelectric nanogenerators for mechanical to electrical energy conversion.
    (ii) Photocatalytic applications (defect and morphology engineering of nanocrystals for waste-water treatment; advancing large-scale immobilized photocatalysts for real applications)
    (iii) Gas sensors (synthesis of heterostructures of nanostructures with various morphologies to achieve high sensitivity/selectivity and device operation at room temperature)
    (iv) Nanophotonics (optimizing the morphology of nanowire arrays for realizing SERS substrates; and enhancing random lasing activity, luminesce properties, and antireflection performance)
  • Fabrication of high-quality graphene-based hybrid nanomaterials from metal carbides and organic compounds at ambient conditions using novel laser-assisted methodologies. (1) Epitaxial graphene growth on SiC wafers by CO2 lasers. (2) Laser-assisted preparation of graphene-coated nano- and micro-sized SiC particles for anti-ballistic applications. (3) Graphene growth by laser decomposition of organic compounds and natural products.
  • CVD growth of 2-D atomically thin TMDCs crystals (transition metal di-chalcogenides) and their combination of vertical heterostructures for optical, catalytic applications (solar cells, water splitting, etc.) and tribological applications.
  • Structure and dynamics of the fluids confined in nanopores, nanoconfined chalcogens
  • Fabrication and characterization of low-dimensional nanoparticles by laser ablation
Glasses / Glass transition and Light-Sensitive Amorphous Semiconductors:
  • Studies for the fundamental understating of structure and dynamics of a diverse family of glasses, supercooled liquids and melts (halide, oxide, and chalcogenide glasses).
  • Amorphous semiconductors: photoinduced phenomena in chalcogenide glasses, athermal photoplastic phenomena, materials for phase-change optical data storage, Raman amplifiers
  • Understanding structure-property relations in bioactive glasses.


Participation in Research Projects:

1996-2013: Participation as PI and principal researcher in more than 20 European, international and nationally funded R&D projects (FP6, FP7, EPET II, PENED, GSRT, NATO, Thales, ITN/HORIZON 2020) and in several Bilateral Collaborations with Germany, Ukraine, Czech Republic etc., Marie-Curie Development Host Fellowships, etc.

More than 80 Poster Presentations in international conferences. 25 Invited Oral Presentations.
