The Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) mourns the loss of Professor Alkiviades Ch. Payatakes, who died on November 29, 2009, after a valiant battle with cancer.

Research Activities:

Transport Phenomena. Fluid Mechanics. Analysis and modelling of porous media. Particle-fluid systems and colloids. Multi-phase flows in porous media. Filtration of gases and liquids. Soil reconstitution including natural attenuation and biodegradation. Transport phenomena in cellular biological media (biofilms, tissues, etc.).

 

Participation in Research Projects:

Main coordinator/ partner in over 50 international (NSF, Energy Institute, ERDA, DOE, STIMULATION STRIDE, BRITE-EURAM, ENVIRONMENT & CLIMATE), national (Ministry of Technology, EPET-II, PAVE) and industrial (DUPONT, SHELL DEVELOPMENT, MARATHON OIL CO, SHELL, SEIKO EPSON and other) research projects. Establishment and Management of the Innovation Relay Centre, HELP-FORWARD NETWORK.

 

Publications:

102 refereed journal papers. 12 papers in books. 31 papers in international conference proceedings.

 

Conference Participation/Attendance:

Participation in over 80 international conferences.

 

Teaching:

Fluid mechanics, transport phenomena, unit operations, theoretical modelling and simulation of physicochemical processes, particle-fluid systems, transport processes in porous media and applications, multiphase systems and interfaces. (At the Dept. of Chem. Eng., Univ. of Houston, TX, USA, and the Dept. of Chem. Eng., Univ. of Patras, Greece.)
