Research Activities:

  • Statistical and dynamical properties of base-pair thermal openings in DNA. Connection of physical properties with biological function.
  • Electronic parameters for charge transport along DNA.
  • Low-dimensional condensed matter and nonlinear systems.
  • Mechanical and vibrational properties of graphene and related materials.
  • Energy or charge transfer, electronic properties, and intrinsic localized modes, in small chemical molecules and biomolecules.
  • Biomolecular networks and systems biology.
  • Controlled drug release.
  • Electron-phonon interactions, polarons, vibrational polarons.
  • Energy localization in nonlinear lattices, charge transfer molecular solids, and organic materials.


Participation in Research Projects:

  • Collaborating investigator of the ERC Advanced Grant 'Tailoring graphene to withstand large deformations' (grant agreement 321124), funded (2M EUR) by the European Research Council, EU (2013-2018).
  • Member of the 'Crete Center for Quantum Complexity and Nanotechnology', funded (~5M EUR) by EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7-REGPOT-2012-2013-1), grant agreement n 316165 (2013-2016).
  • Member of the main research group of the Thales program 'Mathematical modeling of complex systems with applications to physics, biomedicine and the technology of materials', funded (600K EUR) from EU and the Greek State (2012-2015).
  • Member of the main research group of the Thales program 'Graphene and its nanocomposites: production, properties and applications', funded (600K EUR) from EU and the Greek State (2012-2015).
  • Member of the main research group of the Thales program 'Modeling the dynamic progression of cellural aging through the development of systems biology and bioinformatics tools', funded (600K EUR) from EU and the Greek State (2012-2015).
  • Principal investigator of the C. Caratheodory C155 program 'Statistical and dynamical properties of thermal openings in double stranded DNA', funded (24K EUR) from the Research Committee of University of Patras (2007-2010).

Teaching in the Materials Science Dept., Univ. of Patras (since 2006):
Undergraduate Teaching: Special Topics on Mechanics, Numerical Analysis I and II, Cell Biology I and II, Applied Mathematics II, Physics III Laboratory (electromagnetism), and Materials Science V Laboratory (solid state physics).
Graduate course: Materials Modeling II (Biomaterials part).
Graduate seminar: Physical Chemistry of Biopolymers.
Supervision of 8 Diploma Theses and 3 Master Theses.

Participation in the interdepartmental graduate program Informatics in Life Sciences of Univ. of Patras.

Febr. - July 2000: Visiting Lecturer in the Physics Dept., Univ. of Crete, teaching Solid State Physics II.
