About ICE-HT

The Institute of Chemical Engineering Sciences (ICE-HT) was established and began operating at Rio-Patras in 1984 as an independent academic institute.

In 1987 ICE-HT was incorporated into the structure of the Foundation of Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH). This comprises of a network of six institutes that report directly to the General Secretariat of Research and Technology of the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs.

The new identity which ICE-HT assumed by its incorporation into FORTH, gave rise to higher operational flexibility and further expansion within the framework of its original aims.

In addition to fundamental research, the Institute currently conducts applied and technological research in a great variety of fields and provides specialized services to industry.


Human Resources and R&D

The number of staff members and research associates of ICE-HT is approximately 130. Of those, 11 are permanent Researchers (in organic positions), 21 are Collaborating Faculty Members from several departments of the University of Patras (Departments of Chemical Engineering, Medicine, Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics and Pharmacy), 14 are Visiting Faculty Members, 20 are Post-doctoral Fellows, 5 are Collaborating Scientists, 15 are administrative and technical staff members, and approximately 40 are Post-graduate Students.

ICE-HT produces approximately 150 publications per year in refereed international scientific journals (Fig. 1) and its publications receive more than 5300 citations per year.

The number of publications per researcher and year is ca 4.7 (Fig. 2), and the number of citations per researcher and year is ca 165 (Fig. 3).

The average value of our Researchers' h-index indicator per year is ca 25 (Fig. 4), while the Impact Factor of the journals that they publish their work is approximately 4.15 (Fig. 5).


Areas of R&D

ICE-HT conducts fundamental and technological research that is focused on cutting-edge areas of science, specific needs of industry and the environment. The R&D activities of the Institute are concentrated along three major Areas of Research (RA):

RA1: Nanotechnology / Advanced Materials
RA2: Energy / Environment
RA3: Biosciences / Biotechnology

The RAs are supported by research groups with advanced expertise in state-of-the-art scientific and technological fields. The quality/excellence of the RTD work is assessed by panels of independent international experts appointed by the Greek Government (General Secretariat of Research & Technology, Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs) via periodical evaluations based on international standards (regarding leadership, mission and goals, strategy and policy, adequacy of resources, funding policies, facilities, academic reputation, societal relevance and balance of strengths and weaknesses). The Strengths of the Institute have their foundations in its human potential and infrastructure. ICE-HT has well designed research laboratories and it is endowed with state-of-the-art equipment which cover a broad spectrum of applications not normally encountered in Greek research Institutes and Universities. Furthermore, ICE-HT provides a wide spectrum of technical services (instrumental analysis of chemical composition and physicochemical properties, quality assessment, machine and electronics shops, etc.).


Cooperation in R&D and Education

Through its intensive and multifaceted R&D activities FORTH/ICE-HT has acquired a solid international reputation, and has developed close links of collaboration with hundreds of Greek and foreign industrial enterprises, creating for them substantial results, such as improved production processes and new competitive products. Beyond this, the Institute systematically contributes in the development of young researchers, who have acquired a solid basis in modern scientific and technological research fields, and who have gained personal and team experience in fruitful cooperation with industry.


Societal Activities

  • Program "Open Doors" (since 2001)
    Approximately 250 High School students per year are introduced to research by visiting the Institute facilities.
  • School prizes for "Scientific and technological projects" for High School students (since 2004)
    Competition among High School students for the best scientific and technological project.
  • STRATIS V. SOTIRCHOS Memorial Lectureship (since 2005)
    The SVS Lectureship is awarded every second year to an engineer-scientist, who has produced original and fundamentally important results in some R&D field of Chemical Engineering.
  • "Alkiviades Ch. Payatakes" Distinguished Lectures (since 2011)
    ACP Distinguished Lectures are organised every year by FORTH/ICE-HT, in Patras, to honor the memory of Alkiviades Ch. Payatakes (1945-2009), Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Patras, Director of the Institute of Chemical Engineering Sciences of FORTH (1999-2006), and Chairman of FORTH from 2006 until his premature loss, on the 29th November 2009.
  • Workshops / Summer Schools / Training Seminars (since 1985)
