Theme: | Development of biomedical sensing devices for diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring |
Abstract: | In recent years biomedical devices have been at the forefront of the diagnostics field. The traditional methods for diagnosis and monitoring of diseases usually require expensive equipment, extended time of analysis as well as highly qualified personnel. These challenges have paved the way towards the development of simple, robust, affordable, and portable biosensing devices, known as point-of-care (POC) devices. These emerging devices combine cost-effective substrates, advanced device configurations (lateral flow assays, 2D-, 3D-, origami microfluidics) and various detection strategies (e.g., photometric, fluorometric, chemiluminometric, electrochemical etc) to achieve the required specificity and sensitivity. In this context we developed: (i) enzyme-catalyzed chemiluminometric assays for DNA/RNA quantification using a smartphone as a detector/imager, (ii) gold nanoparticle-based biosensors with application to liquid biopsy for single and multiplex detection of cancer mutations, (iii) nanoparticle-based sensors for the detection of microRNAs in biological fluids, (iv) a 3D printed-system for rapid, low-cost and highly versatile fabrication of the sensing areas of lateral flow biosensors. (vi) New electrochemical biosensors are being developed by exploiting 3D printed and paper-based materials. |
