- Soil & groundwater contamination. Soil column experiments and macroscopic simulation of the fate of organic pollutants in the subsurface (e.g. advection/ dispersion/ sorption/ biodegradation of pesticides in groundwater). Chemical characterization of contaminated soils and groundwater with chromatographic techniques (GC-MS, GC-FID, Ion-chromatography).
- Application of advanced oxidation processes to the treatment of contaminated soil and wastewater. Design, lab-scale testing and numerical modeling of cost-effective and sustainable methods for soil remediation (e.g. non-thermal plasma), and wastewater treatment (e.g. nanoparticle-based photocatalytic processes).
- In situ soil and groundwater remediation.Lab-scale testing, numerical modeling and field-scale application of technologies used for the in situ remediation of the vadoze and saturated zones of the subsurface (e.g. steam injection, bioventing, injection of suspensions of zero valent iron nano-particles).
- Improved oil and gas recovery. High pressure routine and special core analysis of reservoir rocks, identification of multiphase flow / transport mechanisms in reservoir rocks, numerical modeling of enhanced oil recovery by surfactants, pore-to-core scale transport properties of unconventional tight reservoirs (e.g. shale gas).
- Nanomaterial-based environmental technologies. Investigation of the capacity of functionalized nanoparticles (CNTs, nZVI) to remove various types of pollutants (e.g. pesticides, hydrocarbons, heavy metals) from surface water, groundwater, and soil.
- Biomass valorization. Utilization of agricultural wastes for the development of low cost hybrid adsorbents capable to remove “cocktails” of multi-species pollutants (e.g. heavy metals, pesticides, PAHs, etc) from wastewater.
