Snake venom metabolomics: Comparative analysis between native snake species in the Peloponnese

FORTH/ICE-HT Metabolic Engineering & Systems Biology Laboratory (Dr. M. I. Klapa) in collaboration with Prof. G. Mitsainas’ research team, Animal Zoology Division, Department of Biology, University of Patras carried out comparative venom metabolomic analysis of 2 native species in the Peloponnese:  (a) the solenoglyphous species Vipera ammodytes meridionalis and (b) the opisthoglyphous species Malpolon insignitus fuscus [news article in greek]. It is noted that it is the first time that the venom metabolic profile of Malpolon species has been quantified and this is among the first untargeted venom metabolomic studies of snakes captured in the field. The research has recently been presented in the 1st International Congress of the European Venom Network (EUVEN) [Panagiotopoulos et al., 2021], a COST Action to which Dr. Klapa is member of the Management Board. Dr. Klapa and Mr. Panagiotopoulos are co-authors in the white paper of EUVEN on the significance of omic analysis in venom research.
