The European Commission has chosen “GRAPHENE<\/a>” as one of the first Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) flagship and it is to receive one billion Euros of funding over the next 10 years. The mission of “GRAPHENE” is to take this material – and other related multilayer derivatives – out of research labs and into society, to cause a revolution on multiple levels in industry and create economic growth and new jobs in Europe.<\/p>\n

The coordinator of the Greek participation and the national representative of “GRAFENE” is Costas Galiotis, Professor of the University of Patras and Collaborating Faculty Member of FORTH\/ICE-HT.<\/p>\n

Key applications of graphene are, for example, high-speed electronic and optical devices, lightweight functional components and advanced batteries. Examples of new consumer products that will be based on graphene technologies include high-speed electronic devices that will be both flexible and durable, such as e-paper and flexible communication devices, as well as lighter and more energy-efficient aircraft . In the long term, graphene is expected to open new horizons in medical applications, such as artificial retinas, and contribute to new computing standards.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that ‘Graphene’ is one of two flagships (the other being the ‘Human Brain Programme’) to win the largest research excellence award in EU history.<\/p>\n
